Wow, what a HUGE weekend for the SCATS guys at the 2018 USA Championships!

August 16th-19th, Boston was home to the nation’s most prestigious annual gymnastics event when The TD Garden Arena hosted the US National Championships.  The biggest names in women’s and men’s gymnastics competed for gold and spots on the US National Teams while also vying for selection to the World Championships team headed to Qatar in October.

While we saw the long-awaited and dominant return of powerhouse Simone Biles on the women’s side, 2-time Olympian and SCATS alum Sam Mikulak, also returned with something to prove after intermittent injury layoffs throughout 2017… and prove it he did.

Sam took the All Around Champion title home with a near FIVE point margin between him and the AA silver medalist, Yul Moldauer. This marks Sam’s tying for a 20 year old record set by former Olympian (and former SCATS coach) Blaine Wilson, who won FIVE all around titles at US Championships during his career!  We can’t wait for him to break it in 2019! Sam also managed to grab 3 more gold medals, participating in all six event finals and winning floor exercise, parallel bars and high bar.

Mikulak wasn’t the only SCATS alum collecting hardware at the end of a hard-fought New England weekend, though.

Huge congratulations are in order to SCATS alumni Kanji Oyama for taking home the bronze on floor at US Championships, and Cameron Bock for placing 7th All Around  in only his first year of college and second year ever competing as a senior. Amazing job, gentlemen!

All three young men made the 2018 US National Team following their incredible performances at US Champs. Both Kanji and Cam will go on to compete at Pan American Championships this month in Peru, while Sam will train for World Championships in Doha, Qatar, which spans from October 25th through November 3rd.

We couldn’t be more proud of all our SCATS guys, and look forward to their next moves. Best of luck to you gentlemen— it is always a privilege watching you all on this journey!
